Karmic debt refers to the amount and type of experiences the individual must go through or endure, to explore his own beliefs of separation as well as emotions and feelings caused by them, in order to ultimately resolve them into spiritual truths and healing. 

Karma is always negative and heavy. It's always painful to deal with, because karma is by definition a degree of separation from Light. As such, such "debt" can often be seen as punishment, fate, an inescapable burden. It is not punishment per se, but it's something the individual must go through for the sake of his own spiritual lessons, chosen in some way or the other by the self.

This debt is simultaneously something can technically be quantifiable, but it's also not written in stone.
